Lawyer Charged With $500,000 Fraud

A Columbia Law School graduate was indicted yesterday on charges of stealing $500,000 from clients, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said.
Gwenerva Cherry funneled $300,000 into her firm’s account from clients who attempted to buy several Harlem properties from a bankrupt corporation she represented, Rapsil Construction Corporation, the district attorneys office said. Ms. Cherry used the funds to pay her own expenses.
Ms. Cherry also received $200,000 from clients for a Brooklyn real estate investment that didn’t exist, the district attorneys office said.
She was charged with grand larceny and scheming to defraud, the district attorney’s office said. If convicted, Ms. Cherry faces up to 15 years in prison.
Phone calls to her lawyer were not returned.
