POLICE BLOTTER

FIVE MURDERED IN FOUR UNRELATED INCIDENTS

Five people were murdered in four unrelated incidents between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, police said. Twenty-three-year-old Gaston Winfield, of 181 Hawthorne St., Brooklyn, was allegedly shot in the head and killed at 11:30 p.m. Sunday in Flatbush, Brooklyn, in an incident police said may be gang-related.

Just before 1 a.m. yesterday, an 18-year-old male and a 21-year-old female were shot on the street in front of 123 W. 133rd St. in Harlem. Daniel Amberister, of 970 St. Mark’s Ave., Brooklyn, who police said had been involved in a verbal argument on Sunday evening, was shot three times in the back. Yvette Duncan, who was alleged to be Amberister’s girlfriend, was shot once in the chest. Both victims were pronounced dead on arrival at Harlem Hospital. Police are looking for the individual with whom Amberister had been arguing to determine whether that person is the shooter.

An hour later, a 32-year-old male, who was still unidentified as of yesterday afternoon, was found shot twice in the stomach outside of 490 Atkins Ave. in East New York, Brooklyn. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Brookdale Hospital.

At 6 a.m., the body of 27-year-old Anthony Braccia, of 44 E. 2nd St., Brooklyn, was discovered with stab wounds to the torso outside 2215 W. 7th St. in Sheepshead Bay. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

REPORT: BROADWAY TICKET SALES UP BY 8.5%

Despite a slow season for Hollywood, gross ticket sales on Broadway this summer are up 8.5% over last year, according to a report in Crain’s. Attendance has grown 4% to 3.1 million since June 1, the start of the 2005-06 season, and almost one-third of the current shows are playing to theaters that are at 90% capacity or more, according to a Broadway trade group cited in the report.

Improved material, better marketing, and the desire to watch something more authentic than the standard Hollywood fare are reasons Crain’s cites for Broadway’s recent success. The fall season looks promising as well. “The Odd Couple,” which will reunite the stars of “The Producers,” Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, opens October 27 for a six-month showing that is already sold out. The show’s $21 million in advance tickets sales is the highest ever for a Broadway show.

POLICE STOP POTENTIAL SUICIDE ATTEMPT

A man poised to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge was rescued yesterday evening by officers of the Police Department’s emergency service unit in a dramatic effort that included boats and helicopters.

Police shut down the bridge to vehicular and pedestrian traffic around 7 p.m. and directed cars backward off the bridge via the bridge’s on-ramps, according to a New York Sun editor who witnessed the incident on his commute home. The man – dressed in blue pants and a blue shirt that was opened, revealing his chest – was standing on the Manhattan side of the bridge, at its southernmost cable.

Six officers clipped into climbing gear, inched their way toward him from the top and bottom of the bridge until one officer reached him and caught him in a bear hug, eliciting cheers from a crowd of onlookers, the Sun editor reported. The officers let the man down on the pedestrian walkway that leads to Manhattan. By 7:45 p.m., the Manhattan-bound lane had been reopened, but the bridge’s Brooklyn-bound lane was still closed. Police said the man is in custody.
