CIty Officials Argue Against Enforcement Laws
City officials argued against a proposed law at a City Council hearing yesterday that would give the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs the authority to levy summonses on vendors of counterfeit goods and seize the illegal property. The director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement, Shari Hyman, said the police department already does a good job enforcing copyright and counterfeit laws, and that the Department of Consumer affairs would not be equipped to enforce the regulations. Another law was introduced at the hearing yesterday that would increase the penalties against criminals who illegally record films at movie theatres.
