Some East Side residents were allowed to return to their homes yesterday after being evacuated over the weekend when a construction crane fell from a highrise, killing seven people.
Eighteen buildings were evacuated, but only five were reopened to residents as emergency workers continued to remove debris from the site. The crane left a path of destruction across two city blocks after a metal collar holding it to the building under construction apparently failed.
Residents will likely be able to return to four other buildings soon, but officials said at least seven buildings suffered structural damage in the accident.
Workers spent yesterday trying to remove the remaining pieces of the crane, including its heavy cab that was lodged in a lot behind a townhouse flattened in the collapse.
