Suspect Substance at Day Care Center

An assistant director of a Bay Ridge childcare center was treated by a HAZMAT crew after opening an envelope containing a suspicious substance, according to fire officials.
Firefighters and EMS responded to a report of a suspicious package at Tutor Time at 8:10 a.m. yesterday. An FDNY spokesman said no children came into contact with the substance, which is being investigated by the Department of Health. A spokeswoman said Tutor Time was deemed safe by rescue workers.
“As a precaution, our assistant director subsequently received appropriate medical testing and results have come back negative,” said Tutor Time spokeswoman Sharon Tse.
FIREFIGHTER CHARGED WITH MENACING GIRLFRIEND
A firefighter was charged with menacing his live-in girlfriend with a gun during a domestic dispute at their Staten Island home, police said.
Firefighter Carl McBratney, 42, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing, police said. Mr. McBratney is accused of displaying a firearm and menacing the 45-year-old victim at 1:04 a.m. yesterday at 21 Miller St. Mr. McBratney fled the scene, but he was apprehended in front of his cousin’s home, across the street from his own. Four firearms were recovered.
ARRESTS IN QUEENS HOMICIDE
Two suspects were arrested and charged yesterday in connection with the murder of a 78-year-old man in Jamaica, Queens, who had apparently been beaten to death, police said.
Jason Shawn Smith, 37, and Liat Corman, 30, who both live in Queens, were arrested yesterday and charged with murder in the second degree and robbery. Smith is a paroled felon with 13 arrests, including nine for robbery. He was released from prison in April after serving a 15-year sentence.
