Q: It seems like the top news story over Memorial Day weekend is always traffic. Which mode of transportation is least likely to lead to a form of rage this weekend: road, rail, or sky?

A: Given the forecast for rain, the best solution may be to stay home and let the delivery man worry about transportation. For those with plans of a non-refundable or otherwise immutable nature, there is no easy answer. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey expects an increase in the number of people flying, taking the train, or riding by bus this weekend, while the number of cars crossing the two tunnels and four bridges controlled by the agency is expected to remain the same, at 5.5 million vehicles. The greatest increase in travelers this year, according to the authority, will come from those expected to fly. The number of people who have booked a flight leaving or arriving into the metro area’s three airports is expected to increase to about 1.3 million travelers this year, up from 1.25 million in 2004. For those flying out of or into JFK Airport, where a 7.6% increase in travelers is expected – the largest spike of any airport in the region – officials advise taking mass transit to and from the hub. A new parking lot expected to add nearly 2,000 parking spaces for cars at JFK remains under construction, and the parking lot across from the American Airlines terminal remains closed.
