‘George Marlin’s Interview’
George Marlin, Michael Long, Jerry Kassar, et al. have turned New York’s Conservative Party into a one-issue advocate [Oped, “George Marlin’s Interview,” March 23, 2007].
Fail its anti-abortion litmus test and invite its wrath, but only if you happen to be a Republican. Rudoph Giuliani did on his first run for mayor, and the party had Mr. Marlin oppose him, splitting the vote and helping elect Mayor Dinkins.
Four years later Mr. Giuliani ran again, and this time Mr. Long’s Conservative Party put the inept Ronald Lauder up against him, but one term of Mr. Dinkins was enough for the good citizens of New York, and Mr. Giuliani won despite the spoiler they ran against him.
Now Mr. Giuliani will be running again, this time for president, and the Conservative Party, still under the leadership of Mr. Long, has gotten out its old attack dog, Mr. Marlin, ready to snipe at Mr. Giuliani’s candidacy again.
This time they’re hoping Senator Clinton will be their prize. The fact that Mrs. Clinton is a Democrat absolves her from the litmus test. My wife and I, once active conservatives, haven’t voted the party line in nearly 20 years.
