‘Fight for Housing’
Edward Glaeser thinks New York should “grow like Houston” [Oped, “Fight for Housing,” May 9, 2007]. Heaven forbid.
We don’t need centerless sprawl. Yes, we need more housing in New York City. It doesn’t have to be all new construction.
There are plenty of older buildings that have been restored or converted to housing, and there are plenty are more that could be.
The popularity of DUMBO in Brooklyn and the amazing renaissance of Harlem housing are but two examples.
Far from being a “special interest” group, the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission protects buildings and areas that make New York unique, provide our sense of history, and promote tourism.
Preservation is not the problem. It’s been in the lead of providing innovative housing solutions.

‘After Rosie’
Your suggestion that Alicia Colon replace Rosie O’Donnell is an inspired one [Editorial, “After Rosie,” April 27, 2007].
Alicia Colon is a unique journalist: she has no arrogance, and her opinions are wise and untainted with political correctness. I once wrote to her, encouraging her to pursue television, and she replied that she had no interest. If she were to go on “The View,” I might even be tempted to watch it. I am in no danger. There is no way that they would select someone with the intelligence, and viewpoint, of Alicia Colon. Too bad.
