“Stuyvesant High School’s Status Burnished by New Book”
As the proud father of two sons who managed to get into Hunter College High School and Stuyvesant, I was bemused to note that Kate Taylor’s article [New York, “Stuyvesant High School’s Status Burnished by New Book,” September 12, 2007] made no mention of the former. Yet, as a percentage of the number of students, Hunter sends a greater ratio to Ivy League schools than Stuyvesant.
Be that as it may, a more important comparison is how the best New York public education compares with the rest of world. Here I can offer a microcosm: my Stuyvesant son went on to McGill University in Montreal where — despite an almost perfect SAT — he was not allowed to graduate in 3 years. Yet students passing the U.K. General Certificate of Education A level or equivalent from England, Hong Kong, Singapore, and elsewhere were allowed to do so.
Maybe the “crown jewels” should not rest on their laurels but instead strive harder to be not just the best in New York, but the best in the world.
