‘Republicans and the Racial Minefield’
Mr. Bartlett makes an important point that in 2008 the Republican Party should reach out to black voters regardless of who is the Democratic nominee [Oped, “Republicans and the Racial Minefield,” March 18, 2008]. I concur, with one important proviso: The outreach be based on Republican principles, it should not be to “outwelfare” the Democrats. The appeal should be on the basis of national security, individual freedom, lower taxes, and love of country. And it must not cringe under the rantings of Reverend Jeremiah Wright and his ilk. The day must come when the appeal of a political party is not targeted to and shaped for “interest groups.” The appeal must be on what the Republican Party stands for, and not a mere pandering for votes.
