UTAH ROUTS GEORGIA TECH IN EMERALD BOWL Travis LaTendresse caught 16 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns, Brett Ratliff passed for 381 yards, and Utah rolled up 550 total yards in a 38-10 win over no. 24 Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl yesterday. Reggie Ball passed for 258 yards for Georgia Tech, whose vaunted defense, ranked among the nation’s leaders, was shredded and stomped by a backup quarterback and his speedy receivers for its season-high in yards allowed.

BENGALS LOCK PALMER THROUGH 2014 The Cincinnati Bengals reworked and extended Carson Palmer’s contract yesterday, giving themselves more salary cap flexibility and a chance to keep their franchise quarterback through 2014. In only his second season as a starter, Palmer has led his team to the playoffs, set a franchise record for touchdown passes, and made the Pro Bowl. Under the reworked deal, Palmer will get a $15 million bonus and a base salary of $6.75 million next year. His base salaries will increase over the final eight years on the deal, topping out at $14 million in 2014 and bringing the total amount of the reworked nine-year deal to $118.75 million.

DOTEL SIGNS ONE-YEAR DEAL WITH YANKEES Reliever Octavio Dotel agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the Yankees yesterday after beginning last season with Oakland but not pitching past May because of elbow surgery. Dotel, 32, was 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 15 games for Oakland in 2005 before going on the DL.

PENGUINS STOMP DEVILS Sidney Crosby had his second two-goal game in three games and Pittsburgh’s other active no. 1 draft pick, Marc-Andre Fleury, turned aside 44 shots in another strong game as the Penguins ended a six-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Devils last night.
