Adu Bids D.C. United Adieu, Traded To Real Salt Lake
Freddy Adu was traded yesterday from D.C. United to Real Salt Lake, ending a sometimes tumultuous three-year run in Washington for the highly touted teenager who clashed with his coach and was often frustrated by his role.
The 17-year-old will move to an MLS franchise in need of a marketable star as it hopes to boost attendance and gain support for a new stadium. He will also get to be an attacking midfielder, a position he never played consistently with United.
“It will be fun to be reunited with him. It will be even more rewarding to have him score goals for us instead of against us,” Real Salt Lake coach John Ellinger, Adu’s former coach on the U.S. Under-17 club, said.
Adu’s stated goal is to play for a European team, and he becomes eligible to transfer to a club outside America once he turns 18 on June 2. He recently spent two weeks working out with Manchester United in England.

Lions’ Kevin Jones Could Be Out for the Season
Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones will not play at Green Bay on Sunday, and team officials are concerned his foot injury could keep him out a lot longer.
Jones injured his left foot late in Sunday’s 30–20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and was undergoing testing yesterday. He may have a fracture/dislocation of the foot, an injury that kept linebacker Teddy Lehman on the sidelines for nearly 12 months.
“That was frustrating, because it was almost a complete year before I played football again,” Lehman said yesterday. “If that’s what Kevin has, all I can tell him is to keep working, even when you feel like it will never get better.”
Stokley May Miss Season With Achilles’ Injury
Colts receiver Brandon Stokley may be lost for the season with an injured right Achilles’ tendon.
Coach Tony Dungy said he did not know the severity of the injury, but a recently signed receiver, Ricky Proehl, acknowledged he expected to get more playing time after Stokley apparently ruptured the tendon.
“Sometimes things happen for a reason,” Proehl said. “He’ll be back. He’s a tremendous player and a tremendous athlete, and I just hated for this to happen.”

Erickson Named Arizona State Coach
The allure of another Pac-10 job was too much for Dennis Erickson to pass up.
Arizona State introduced the well-traveled Erickson yesterday as its new football coach — and the man school officials hope will lead the Sun Devils out of mediocrity.
The hiring, announced at a news conference on the ASU campus, marks the third Pac-10 coaching job for Erickson. He previously had stints at Washington State and Oregon State.
The 59-year-old coach has a 149-64-1 record in 18 seasons that also included stops in Idaho (twice), Wyoming, and Miami. He also coached six years in the NFL, four with Seattle and two with San Francisco. He had signed a five-year contract with Idaho a year ago only to leave after one season.
