QUINN AGREES TO BROWNS DEAL

Quarterback Brady Quinn has agreed to a five-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, ending an 11-day holdout that essentially eliminated his chances to begin the season as the team’s starter. Quinn was flying to the Browns’ headquarters Tuesday to sign the deal, a person within the league told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract’s language was still being finalized.

The deal, worth $20.2 million, with $7.75 million guaranteed, could reach $30 million over five years with incentives.

A four-year starter at Notre Dame, Quinn was projected as a top 10 pick in April’s draft. When he slipped deeper into the first round, the Browns traded a 2008 first-round pick to Dallas and selected the Ohio native who grew up a Browns fan at no. 22.

Quinn also missed the team’s four-day rookie orientation before camp

$30M EXTENSION FOR BYRNES

The Arizona Diamondbacks and popular outfielder Eric Byrnes agreed Tuesday to a $30 million, three-year contract extension through 2010. The deal comes after talks broke down last month. Byrnes is batting .303 with 17 home runs, 64 RBIs, 21 doubles and 28 stolen bases. He is seventh in the National League in hits with 135 and fifth in the league in triples with seven.

WARINER RUNS FASTEST METERS

Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner won the 400 meters with the year’s fastest time Tuesday, finishing in 43.50 seconds to earn a one-carat diamond at the DN Galan meet. Wariner finished in 43.50 seconds, the sixth-fastest 400 ever, to set an Olympic Stadium record.
