COLLEGE FOOTBALL
TEBOW, MCFADDEN, BRENNAN, DANIEL ARE HEISMAN FINALISTS
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, trying to become the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, the runner-up for last year’s award, were among the four finalists selected yesterday. Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel and Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan were the other finalists. They will all be in New York on Saturday night when the award is given to the top player in college football.
“I think it’s a good race,” Brennan said at a news conference. “I think anybody can win it. It’s up to the voters. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.”
HOCKEY
IN OVERTIME, DEVILS WIN EIGHTH STRAIGHT
Patrik Elias scored his second goal of the game with 1:44 left in overtime, and the New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak to eight with a 4–3 comeback victory over the Boston Bruins last night. Zach Parise also scored twice, and Martin Brodeur made 23 saves to help the Devils overcome a three-goal deficit.
IN SHOOTOUT, ATLANTA TOPS REELING ISLANDERS
The Atlanta Thrashers overcome nine wasted power plays to beat the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout last night, handing New York its fourth straight loss.
Slava Kozlov and Ilya Kovalchuk scored in the shootout for Atlanta. Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped Bill Guerin and Miroslav Satan in the shootout. Lehtonen made 30 stops in only his second start — both wins against the Islanders — since missing 16 games because of a groin injury.
