If the suit fits On November 15, Charles Tyrwhitt – a British label best known for shirts – will introduce its first line of suits and open the doors to a New York flagship (its largest store). Located in Midtown, the 3,000-square-foot shop will also include collections for women and children.
The Tyrwhitt suit collection comes in five patterns, all made of 100% all-year-round wool from Yorkshire, England. Jackets are three-button single-breasted with twin vents ($495), and trousers are single-pleat with altered leg length and working cuff buttons ($225). The store’s decor echoes the apparel with a contemporary twist on classic English men’s style.

The temporary 2,500-square-foot store is filled with all things Icelandic, notably an ice-water bar and Reyka Vodka tastings. Outerwear for women and children is also available.

A velvet blaze What’s selling well right now on the men’s floor? Retailers around town say it’s the velvet jacket. “Velvet is what’s happening for fall,” an owner of the retail shop Big Drop, Shy Iland, said.
According to Stephen Cardino, vice president for men’s fashion at Macy’s, the jackets are most popular in deep colors, such as a three-button Calvin Klein jacket, with back vent, in black or black pinstripe ($199.99) and a Hugo Boss two-button in chocolate brown ($395). What’s on underneath? In addition to the classic button-down dress shirt, the current trend is conversational T-shirts.
But beware: Velvet may not be for everyone. “It’s for the fashion-forward,” the American brand manager for Reiss, Lyndon Mackenzie, said. “Velvet is a fashion statement.”
True enough, but these days even Gap has a jacket in velvet corduroy.
