When Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America organize a sample sale to raise money to help those living with HIV and AIDS, stylish ladies scamper in with their wallets open. These shoppers know that top designers put out merchandise at 70% off retail prices; and they know that competition for the goods can be fierce.

This fashion frenzy, 7th on Sale, will kick off with a black-tie preview at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue at 26th Street. More than 100 designers, including Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren, and Stella McCartney, are taking part in the event. Selections include apparel for men and women, as well as accessories, home goods, and art. Dressing rooms have been set up at the armory, but Vogue contributor and novelist Plum Sykes doesn’t want to waste a moment of shopping time. She will be wearing a flesh-colored, long jersey dress by Bill Blass to the preview. “It’s very skinny on the body, so I’m thinking that most things I want to try on will just go over it,” she said.

At sample sales, speed is essential, the famously social dermatologist Lisa Airan, said. “I’m thinking of bringing a big bag so I can slip on my Lanvin flats and move around quickly,” she said. The 7th on Sale event — since 1990, it has raised $12.7 million for HIV- and AIDS-related causes — has an online component, in collaboration with eBay, which includes gowns donated by celebrities. The virtual auction runs November 15–December 6 at 7th on sale.ebay.com. Bidding starts at 10% of the retail price.

7th on Sale, gala preview, Thursday, 6–10 p.m., invitation only; public access, Friday, 4–6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.–noon and 3–5 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., 69th Regiment Armory, 68 Lexington Ave. at 26th Street, 866-558-3078, $20.
