SKI PACKAGES

The snowplow turn is just a ski lesson away. Smuggler’s Notch in Vermont features packages with daily group ski and snowboard lessons for children. Adult first-time skiers or riders also receive instruction, and those above the novice level are entitled to a 50% discount. Condominium lodging, daily lift tickets on three mountains, after-ski activities, and use of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails come included, and with 5-day stays before December 18, so does a free Smuggler’s Notch 2004-2005 season lift pass. Younger children participate in all-day ski/snowboard camp including lunch and afternoon activities indoors. Prices start at $99 a day for adults and $79 a day for children.

SHOPPING

British Airways’ London shopping packages include roundtrip air from JFK or Newark, three nights at the Corus Hotel Hyde Park, Continental breakfast, a L20 Harrods voucher, and afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason. On sale through December 31, with some schedule restrictions, packages must be booked eight days prior to departure. The $399 ticket price hinges on double occupancy and midweek travel; taxes add an additional $105.

WINTER ADVENTURE

From mid-March through early April, dog- and reindeer-sled enthusiasts can book 11-day sled rides through Lapland to Sweden’s famous Ice Hotel. Participants drive their own team of husky and reindeer sleds.

Along with the opportunity to mush, Mountain Travel Sobek has added another new offering to its winter calendar: a trip to South America’s mountaineering paradise, Patagonia, where adventurers can circumnavigate two rock monoliths. Aspirants have more than a year to sharpen their crampons and get in shape for the elevations of Fitroy and Cerro Torre. The 19-day journey begins January 14, 2006.

Land costs for both trips start at $4,190.
