RESTAURANT OPENING
Fans of the Old Homestead Steak House, established in 1868 in Manhattan’s Meatpacking district will be pleased to note that this old standby has opened up inside the Beltway. Though the Bethesda eatery has a more contemporary look than the original, a press release assures that the kitchen still specializes in the four basic food groups: “beef, beef, beef, and beef.” The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Friday and dinner nightly; the address is 7501 Wisconsin Ave., across the street from the Bethesda Metro station. For reservations, call 301-654-2006.
PARIS HOTEL DEAL
The four-star Hotel Edouard VII in Paris is the only hotel on the city’s grand Avenue de l’Opera. In addition to its stellar location, this Belle Epoque gem – which unlike many upscale hotels in Paris these days is wholly owned by a French family – has a comfortable, contemporary look, spacious guestrooms, and a terrific restaurant, Angl’Opera.
Readers of The New York Sun can enjoy two nights for the price of one on any room reserved between July 9 and August 31 (room rates during this period begin at $245). The offer is for individual travelers only, is subject to availability, and cannot be used in conjunction with any other hotel offer or promotion. Travelers must specify “The New York Sun Two-for-One Deal” when making reservations. To reserve, call 011-331-4261-5690, fax 011-331-4261-4773, or e-mail info@edouard7hotel.com.
ARCTIC CRUISES
The hotter it gets, the more appealing a break to colder climes becomes. And how cool does cruising the wilds of the Svalbard Archipelago sound? Mountain Travel Sobek is leading three adventure cruises to points far north aboard the 100-passenger Akademik Sergey Vavilov, a polar expedition ship. The first two itineraries, from July 21-31 and July 31-August 10, feature circumnavigation of the icy Svalbards, known to Vikings, polar bears, and other brawny fauna, and include mini-cruises in Zodiac boats. Stops may include Ny Alesund, the northernmost village in the world; Smeerenburg, a 17th-century Dutch whaling site, and wild Nordaustlandet, the second largest island in the chain. The land/cruise costs range from $2,750-$5,290, depending on cabin selection. Another journey, set for August 10-22, will explore the scenic west coast of Greenland and Iceland’s Westmann Islands (prices range from $3,090 to $5,590).
