Trump Says Carney Is Not Welcome on the Board of Peace After a Davos Jab

President Trump is withdrawing an invitation for Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada to join his new Board of Peace after Mr. Carney urged leaders of middle-power countries to resist superpowers.In a brief letter posted on his Truth Social account, Mr. Trump did not give a reason for the snub but it follows a pattern of him lashing out at perceived slights.Mr. Carney had indicated last week that he would accept Mr. Trump’s offer but, in the days since, the two leaders have verbally jabbed back-and-forth at each other.In a stark speech on Tuesday to the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland, Mr. Carney warned there is a “rupture” in the rules-based international order.Mr. Carney said that like-minded countries need to bond together to combat intimidation by larger nations. “There is a strong tendency for countries to go along to get along,” Mr. Carney said. “To accommodate. To avoid trouble. To hope that compliance will buy safety. It won’t.”Mr. Carney did not directly mention President Trump but said “great powers” are weaponizing economic integration.When Mr. Trump addressed the forum on Wednesday, he called out Mr. Carney by name. “Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way,” Mr. Trump said. “They should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your Prime Minister yesterday, he wasn’t so grateful.”“Canada lives because of the United States,” Mr. Trump added. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”Mr. Carney responded to Mr. Trump directly after returning to Canada. “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States,” Mr. Carney said. “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”Mr. Trump has continually antagonized Canada since returning to the White House. He has often commented that it should be the 51st state.Hours before Mr. Carney’s Davos speech, Mr. Trump posted a photo on his Truth Social account of Canada and Greenland with the American flag superimposed over them.Mr. Trump has also attempted to punish Canada with tariffs, although the effects of them are blunted by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which shields many goods from tariffs. That agreement, however, is up for review this year.Mr. Trump unveiled his Board of Peace at Davos on Thursday. It was envisioned to help administer the governance and rebuilding of the Gaza Strip but the charter makes no reference to Gaza.The Board of Peace itself is led by Mr. Trump as chairman and will include potentially dozens of national leaders. Many of America’s western allies have not committed to joining. Among the nations that have accepted invitations include a host of monarchies, dictatorships, illiberal democracies, and countries led by fellow conservatives.Mr. Carney left Davos before the official unveiling of the board.
