Britain’s Royal Navy, All Its Hunter-Killer Submarines Out of Action, Leaves Russia Ruling the Deep

The Royal Navy’s entire hunter-killer submarine fleet is out of service, and their American counterparts are no longer available to North Atlantic Treaty allies in a crisis. Russia is exploiting this strategic gap, challenging Europeans to put steel behind their boasts about mounting a continental defense independent of the Yanks.Multiple reports describe Britain’s five Astute Class submarines — His Majesty’s Ships Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious, and Anson — being stuck in port. They’ve gone wanting for repair and refit capabilities to ready them for war while their sister ship, HMS Agamemnon, languishes in the testing phase.A former first sea lord, Admiral Lord West, told the Daily Mail on Sunday that the Astutes are essential “for looking after our ballistic missile” Vanguard submarines. Each Vanguard packs up to 16 Trident nuclear missiles. They are Britain’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent and how, in the event of an atomic attack, the British Empire strikes back.“They are fundamental,” Lord West said of the Astutes, “for frightening and terrifying the Russians” and detecting covert submarine operations like the one Britain exposed in March. They’re also key to protecting the United Kingdom’s two aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales — although neither of those is available for duty, either.Lord West called it “a real embarrassment” for the Astute Class fleet to be paralyzed. The blow comes after the Royal Navy completed a ten-day mission to monitor a Russian submarine and warship that violated British waters in the English Channel and North Sea. During past standoffs with the Soviet Union, the Kremlin’s Northern Fleet had been bottled up by those chokepoints.On Monday, Britain’s chief of the defense staff, Sir Richard Knighton, told the BBC that Russia is “raising the stakes and risks crossing a line.” He called the danger “greater than I have known since the Cold War,” and added that “it is important that we enhance the capability and the readiness of our Armed Forces alongside our allies.”For a century, when Britain needed an ally, it called America. In April, the Ministry of Defense reported that the Kremlin’s naval threats in British waters had jumped 30 percent in the past two years.Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research is called its “special forces of the sea.” The Ministry of Defense says that its goal is to “develop capabilities to be deployed from specialist surface vessels and submarines, that are intended to survey underwater infrastructure during peacetime, but then damage or destroy infrastructure during a conflict.”Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it was suspected of disrupting communications by severing Norwegian undersea cables and of blowing up the Nordstream natural gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. Britain scrambled naval assets to protect other undersea assets from further sabotage.The British Isles are the nexus for a tangle of vital arteries and fiber optic cables — a digital Strait of Hormuz. According to a Ministry of Defense statement in April, “over 99 percent of international data traffic, including voice calls and internet data,” pass through “subsea cables,” a network which “underpins global banking, trade, and communications.”During World War I, Britain demonstrated the value of controlling the ocean floor, isolating the German Empire by cutting its telegraph lines. London’s interception of the infamous Zimmermann Telegram, which promised Mexico territory it lost to America in the mid-1840s if it invaded across the Rio Grande, helped push President Wilson to join the Allies.The already diminished Royal Navy’s failure to maintain its hunter-killer submarines creates vulnerabilities in undersea security that Russia is eager to exploit in a future war. It’s the latest ping on the radar of NATO allies, a warning that America will no longer answer every cry for help, even when it’s London calling.
