John (Joe Pantoliano) is a construction worker struggling to hold his family together. His wife, Mary (Marcia Gay Harden), has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and her condition continues to deteriorate. While Joe tries to explain Mary’s disease to the couple’s young son Chris (Devon Gearhart), he quits his job and devotes his time to building a sailboat, a project that reminds him of better days for Mary and himself.
