Pamela Rosenberg, the 63-year-old director of the Berlin Philharmonic, has decided she won’t stay in the post after her contract expires in 2010, the orchestra said.
“Pamela Rosenberg has decided she no longer wants to be attached to an institution and wants to spend her time on individual projects,” Stefan Stahnke, the orchestra’s spokesman, said in a telephone interview. “That means she won’t go to any other institution, like an opera house, either.”
The Berlin Philharmonic’s chief conductor, Simon Rattle, is negotiating with the orchestra on whether his contract will be extended beyond 2012, Mr. Stahnke said. The orchestra, which has a democratic management tradition, will vote on whether Mr. Rattle, 53, should stay once terms are agreed.
“There are lots of aspects to be discussed,” Mr. Stahnke said. “The decision will be made in the coming year.”
