The co-founder and chairman of Getty Images Inc., Mark Getty, will chair the board of London’s National Gallery beginning in August, after serving on it for nine years, the museum said Monday in an e-mailed release.

Mr. Getty will replace Peter Scott, who has been chairman since January 2000. The London museum’s previous director, Charles Saumarez Smith, left for the Royal Academy of Arts last year after disagreements with Mr. Scott.

Mr. Getty said he was pleased to be working with the new director, Nicholas Penny, who “has a deep appreciation” of European art, “but also understands that the Gallery needs to adapt to today’s rapidly changing society and engage the next generation.”

Mr. Getty’s term begins on August 11 and runs for three years.
