PAST AND PRESENT Michal Heiman, an Israeli art teacher, uses photographs of anything from 19th-century paintings to current newspapers and then incorporates text and her own portrait. The resulting exhibit, “I Was There,” is her first New York solo exhibition. Through Saturday, January 21, Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Andrea Meislin Gallery, 526 W. 26th St., between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, suite 214, 212-627-2552, free.

GLOBAL VIEW A retrospective of the work of Indian-born artist Zarina Hashmi features work from 1977 to the present. In the series “Cities,” she pays homage to nine cities that have suffered violence in recent years, including Beirut, Kabul, Baghdad, and New York. Through Thursday, December 22, Tuesday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m., Bose Pacia Gallery, 508 W. 26th St., between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, 11th floor, 212-909-1874, free.

STROBE SNAPS After artist James Nares suffered an aneurysm, he lost his ability to work for long periods at a time. Unable to go to his studio, he developed new ways of making art at home: Using a strobe light, he set his digital camera on long exposure, moving through the light to capture the dizzying movement of the human body. The results are on display in “Chronophotographs,” along with Mr. Nares’s new paintings. Through Saturday, January 7, Paul Kasmin Gallery, 511 W. 27th St. at Tenth Avenue, 212-563-4474, free.
