SWIMMING SAFELY Kim and Stew Leonard Jr. (of the suburban food emporiums Stew Leonard’s) read their children’s book on water safety, “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim” (Kimberly Press), cowritten with Dr. Lawrence Shapiro and suitable for children ages 2-6. The Leonards became advocates of water safety after they lost their 21-month old son, Stewie, in a drowning accident in 1989. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children under age 5, with the majority of accidents happening during the summer months. Today, 4-5 p.m., Bank Street Book Store, 112th Street at Broadway, 212-678-1654, free.


WILD THINGS The Jewish Museum presents a family program in conjunction with the exhibit “Wild Things: The Art of Maurice Sendak.” The event includes self-guided treasure hunts through the exhibit, screenings of five episodes of “Seven Little Monsters” and other cartoons, and Middle-Eastern music by Yoel Ben-Simhon and The Sultana Trio. A childfriendly kosher gourmet menu will also be available. Tomorrow, 5-9 p.m., The Jewish Museum, 1109 Fifth Ave., at 92nd Street, 212-423-3200, pay what you wish ($10 general, $7.50 students and seniors, free for children under 12).


DETECTIVES IN OZ Hiding in the museum’s Magic Tent, youngsters listen to a mystery story set in Australia, then embark on a treasure hunt to solve the case. Friday, 3 and 4 p.m., Children’s Museum of Manhattan, 212 W. 83rd St., between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway, 212-721-1223, $8 general, $5 seniors.


HAND STAMPS Children make art by using their own hands as stamps. Saturday, 2 p.m., Rubin Museum of Art, 150 W. 17th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, 212-620-5000, $7 general, $5 seniors and students, children free.
