FINNISH STRONG
BAM cinematek’s series of recent Finnish films kicks off with “Screaming Men,” a humorous documentary about a choir of men who shout their tunes. The film culminates in the choir’s struggle with the French bureaucracy when it plans to yell “La Marseillaise” at a Paris museum. A question-and-answer session with director Mika Ronkainen follows the screening (today, 7:30 p.m.). AVANT EVENING
Filmmaker and film studies professor Paul Arthur presents an evening of avant-garde cinema. Mr. Arthur presents a screening of short films and lectures on how avant garde films depict urban environments. Film selections include Rudy Burkhardt’s “What Mozart Saw on Mulberry Street,” Joyce Wieland’s “1933,” and Jim Jennings ‘s “Silvercup.” Tomorrow, 6:30 p.m., Lincoln Center, Walter Reade Theater, 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, 212-496-3809, $10 general, $7 students, $6 members.
GEEK LOVE
“Otaku Cinema Slam!” features recent Japanese films that celebrate otaku – geeks with monomaniacal pop-culture obsessions. Up next: the North American premiere of “Otakus in Love,” Suzuki Matsuo’s live action adaptation of a comic by Jun Hanyunyu. The film is about the romance between a “manga artisan,” who draws and paints on stones, and an amateur manga artist who is into cosplay – dressing up like manga and anime characters.
