80 MUSICAL YEARS Jazz composer and pianist Randy Weston celebrates his 80th birthday by performing two shows in Brooklyn. The first show is a solo piano performance (tonight). On the weekend, Mr.Weston participates in “The Spirit of Afrika,” a concert featuring a collection of jazz performers (Saturday). Both performances: 8 p.m., Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus, Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, Flatbush and DeKalb avenues, 718-636-4181 ext. 2229, $20-$45.
PIANO PERFORMANCE Stepan Simonian, the winner of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, performs a program of works for piano by Bach, Perle, Glinka, Prokofiev, and Mussorgsky. Tonight, 8 p.m., Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, 881 Seventh Ave. at 57th Street, 212-247-7800, $15-$25.
TWO QUARTETS The Avalon String Quartet performs two programs of string quartets by Schonberg, Beethoven, and Webern. The quartet consists of violinists Blaise Magniere and Marie Wang, violist Anthony Devroye,and cellist Sumire Kudo. Tonight and Saturday, 8 p.m., Kaufman Center, Merkin Concert Hall, 129 W. 67th St. at Broadway, 212-501-3330, $20 general, $10 seniors and students, $32 both concerts.
SECOND CLAP Alex Ounsworth of the popular indie rock band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah plays with a new ensemble that include members of Ida, Boss Tweed, and other bands.
