SHORT STUFF David Sedaris is host at an evening of readings by some of the biggest names in short stories: Lorrie Moore, Charles Baxter, Akhil Sharma, and Joyce Carol Oates are among the scheduled participants. Sarah Vowell will also participate in the reading to celebrate the fund-raising success of the recent collection “Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules,” edited by Mr. Sedaris. PROUST PRIDE The Proust Society of America presents Proust Fest 2005 to celebrate the 134th birthday of Marcel Proust. The society conducts a public reading of the “Swann in Love” section of his epic novel “In Search of Lost Time.” Saturday, 10 a.m-11 p.m., Mercantile Library of New York, 17 E. 47th St., between Fifth and Madison avenues, 212-755-6710, $5, reservations required.
