A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Java at 1:04 p.m. New York time, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.
The tremor lasted about a minute, and there were no reports of casualties or damage, the agency said. No alert was issued for a tsunami.
The earthquake was centered about 65 miles east of Jakarta at a depth of 179.7 miles, the American agency said.
The temblor’s depth minimized the threat of damage and the possibility for hazardous ocean waves.
“There’s no doubt there was a strong shake felt in Jakarta, but the quake was so deep it’s unlikely there was any severe damage or a threat of a tsunami,” Vindell Hsu, a Pacific Tsunami Center geophysicist, said in an interview from Hawaii.
