Gas Price Average Tops $6 a Gallon In California as Gas Prices Soar Nationwide

Gas prices are soaring across the United States, with the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded now topping the $6 mark in California and Americans spending $125 million more to fill their cars on Friday than they did the previous week.According to AAA, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline surged by roughly 35 cents in just one week, climbing to $4.43. The sharp increase represents one of the fastest short-term price jumps in recent history, AAA said. The only times in recent years when gasoline prices have shot up so aggressively over a seven-day period were shortly after the Iran war began and in March 2022, immediately following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.The financial toll on American drivers is immediate and severe. On a typical day, people in the U.S. pump approximately 375 million gallons of gasoline. Because of the rapid price hike, Americans spent an estimated $125 million more filling their tanks on Friday than they did the previous week, the Wall Street Journal reported.While the current surge is causing widespread frustration, prices have not quite reached historical peaks. The highest recorded average price for regular unleaded gasoline occurred under the Biden administration, hitting $5.01 per gallon on June 14, 2022. However, the speed of this current nine-week price surge — up $1.41 since the weeks preceding the Iran conflict — is the highest recorded since the early 1990s, according to Energy Department data.The pain at the pump varies significantly depending on geography. On the lower end of the spectrum, Mississippi boasts the cheapest gas in the country, with drivers paying an average of $3.86 per gallon.Conversely, California is experiencing the most extreme price hikes. The current average for regular gasoline in the state sits at a staggering $6.08 per gallon, up from $4.77 a year ago. Retail prices in California consistently exceed the national average by more than a dollar per gallon, driven by a unique combination of taxation, environmental policy, and geographic isolation.California drivers pay the highest fuel taxes in the nation. As of March 2026, local, state, and federal taxes total roughly 90 cents per gallon. This includes a state excise tax of 60 cents per gallon, which is more than double the national average of 28 cents.Beyond taxes, California’s strict environmental regulations heavily impact fuel costs. The state requires a special, cleaner-burning fuel blend known as California Reformulated Gasoline. While designed to reduce pollution and improve air quality, this blend requires complex processing and expensive components. In addition, the California Energy Commission estimates that environmental compliance costs — such as the Cap-and-Trade Program and Low Carbon Fuel Standard — add up to 54 cents per gallon.Furthermore, California operates as an isolated petroleum market. The state lacks pipeline connections to major Gulf Coast refining centers, meaning it must produce its own fuel or import it via marine vessels from countries like India and South Korea. With local refinery capacity declining and limited outside suppliers capable of meeting the state’s stringent fuel blending requirements, California is highly vulnerable to supply bottlenecks. Any unexpected refinery outage or routine maintenance can lead to sudden, massive price spikes.While the United States as a whole is somewhat insulated from the falloff in supplies from the Persian Gulf, it is not immune to global supply shocks. Recent data indicates that U.S. gasoline inventories are falling quickly. With the busy summer driving season fast approaching and no sign that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen soon, supplies could tighten even further. In some regions, such as the Great Lakes, refinery issues have already exacerbated the national trend; Ohio, for instance, saw regular gasoline jump to $4.83 a gallon, compared with $3.91 just a week earlier.For many Americans, frequent fill-ups are an unavoidable necessity, leaving them little time to adjust their household budgets. Economists at UBS recently noted that larger tax refunds resulting from last year’s tax bill might offer some temporary relief, the Journal reported.Refunds have been tracking about $50 billion to $60 billion higher than a year ago. However, the UBS economists also calculated a grim reality: if gasoline prices remain elevated, Americans will spend approximately $90 billion more at the pump over the course of a year than they would have if gas had remained near the $3 mark.
