Outdoor furniture has long suffered outsider treatment. But just because a chair is furnishing the terrace, not the living room, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be attractive. Last month, the 115-year-old interior design group F. Schumacher & Co. introduced Plein Air, a collection of sun- and weather-resistant fabrics handsome enough to be used indoors and out. The line’s earthy palette of browns and blues comes in nine coordinating patterns, featuring scrolling vines, discrete diamond and windowpane checks, and neutral basket weaves. Made of machine-washable Dralon acrylic, the durable fabrics resist mold and mildew as well as fading from exposure to chlorine, seawater, and sunlight. As winter descends, there’s plenty of time to ship the patio furniture off to the upholsterer for a long-needed makeover.
