‘Come and Take It’: Massachusetts Warns RFK Jr. To Keep His Hands Off Their Dunkin’ Iced Coffee

The Governor of Massachusetts is threatening Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to “come and take it” in response to a comment that Mr. Kennedy made about potentially going after Dunkin’s over its sugar levels in its iced coffee. The Massachusetts based coffee chain is beloved in Mr. Kennedy’s birth state and a morning staple for Bay Staters.Mr. Kennedy referenced Dunkin and its rival, Starbucks, during a stop in Texas last week as part of a nationwide Take Back Your Health tour. He was talking about forcing food companies to have every new ingredient in their foods be approved when he suddenly pivoted to the popular coffee chains.“We’re going to ask Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, ‘Show us the safety data that show that it’s OK for a teenage girl to drink an iced coffee with 115 grams of sugar in it,’” Mr. Kennedy said. “I don’t think they’re gonna be able to do it.” He then quickly moved on to talk about “fixing” baby formula. Governor Maura Healey posted an image on X of a Dunkin drink and the “Come and Take It” message along with a Boston Globe article detailing Mr. Kennedy’s comments.It was unclear what drinks Mr. Kennedy was referring to or what the Department of Health and Human Services would do about the drinks. The department did not immediately return a request for more information.Dunkin’ and Starbucks also did not respond to requests for comment. Both chains post the nutritional content of their drinks on their websites. Their iced coffees have widely varying sugar levels with some having more than 60 grams of sugar, which is above the 50 grams maximum daily recommended limit.The Starbucks chief executive officer, Brian Niccol, met with Mr. Kennedy last June and said he was altering the company’s menu to align it with the Trump administration’s Make America healthy Again initiative but those efforts centers around artificial dyes, artificial flavors, and high fructose corn syrup and other artificial sweeteners.Mr. Kennedy has shifted his recent messaging from controversial stances on vaccines to more focusing on healthy eating. During the Austin event he suggested that Americans turn to liver or cheaper cuts of steak to cope with high beef prices. Red meat is on the top of the newly revamped food pyramid.Several sectors of the American food industry recently teamed up to start a messaging campaign warning that Mr. Kennedy’s campaign blaming processed foods for chronic illness is threatening their businesses and it threatens a food and beverage manufacturing industry that employs 47 million workers.
