Michigan Previews the Democrats’ Destination on Israel

For a glimpse of the possible future of the Democratic Party, look no further than the Wolverine State. One of the party’s candidates for Senate, Abdul El-Sayed, told CNN over the weekend that Israel is “just as evil” as Hamas. Mr. El-Sayed is no fringe candidate. He is in the running for the nomination. To serve on the University of Michigan’s regents, the Democrats gave their endorsement to one Amir Makled. He makes Mr. El-Sayed look like David Ben-Gurion.Mr. Makled’s views on Jews are hardly a secret. The Detroit News has reported that he has referred to Israeli Jews as “demons” who “lie, cheat, murder, and blackmail.” He has shared an antisemitic meme coined by ISIS and promoted tribunes of antisemitism like Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Jackson Hinkle. So extreme was Mr. Makled’s rhetoric and so ardent his support of Hezbollah that even the SEIU could not bring itself to support his candidacy.Michigan’s Democrats demurred from endorsing the incumbent, Jordan Acker, a Jewish regent whose car and home has been vandalized with antisemitic graffiti. Mr. Makled’s support for Hezbollah comes a month after a man with family ties to the Party of God attacked the state’s largest synagogue and its attached school at West Bloomfield. Jewish Insider reckons that the regents’ race “results mark a new low for Michigan Democrats.”Michigan, which is represented in Congress by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, has long been a hotbed of anti-Israel fervor. Jewish Insider, though, cautions that “it’s not just in Michigan where the weekend’s developments suggest an ominous turn in the Democratic Party’s evolution.” Last week posts surfaced from a Senate frontrunner in Maine, Graham Platner, that included praise in 2014 for Hamas’s military acumen. “I dig it,” he wrote.Mr. Platner sports a tattoo on his chest — now covered — that resembles the “Totenkopf” or skull and crossbones popular with Nazi military units. Senator John Fetterman, when asked about Mr. Platner’s candidacy over the weekend, called it “crazy” and concluded that the “left has a serious issue with antisemitism.” Mr. Fetterman also lamented Mr. El-Sayed’s candidacy as a signal that Democrats are becoming “more and more hostile to Israel.” The waxing of anti-Israel forces within the Democratic Party comes as its chances of seizing back the heights of government appear to be brightening. The Times’s Nate Cohn reckons in respect of the race for the Senate that “everything is breaking the Democrats’ way” and that “it’s not hard to imagine a Democratic tsunami in November.” He concludes that “a feasible path for the party to win the Senate is coming into focus.”Also coming into focus, though, is the party’s animating antagonism toward the Jewish state. Last week 40 out of 47 Senate Democrats supported a resolution from Senator Bernie Sanders to block the sale of bulldozers to Israel. Thirty-six Democrats backed another resolution to block the sale of bombs to the Jewish state. Michigan’s Jewish senator, Elissa Slotkin, an ostensible moderate with 2028 dreams, wheeled against the Jewish state on both votes. No doubt Ms. Slotkin was reading the tea leaves back home. Indications from the Great Lakes State suggest a party whose animus toward Israel is far from shallow. If one or both of Messrs. El-Sayed and Platner can reach the Senate, 40 out of 47 could be remembered as the good old days for Democratic arithmetic on Israel. Vox crows that “Israel’s critics are winning the battle for the Democratic Party.” It is hard to argue with that sentiment.
