Mike Lindell’s Biggest Campaign Expense Is To Buy Thousands of Copies of His Own Book

MyPillow founder Mike Lindell is seeing a surge in sales of his memoir as he runs for governor of Minnesota, but the bulk of the purchases are by his own campaign.The election denier and President Trump loyalist announced, in December, his campaign to succeed Governor Tim Walz.A new campaign finance report shows that Mr. Lindell raised more than $350,000 in individual contributions and his expenditures totaled nearly $275,000. The largest campaign expense was $187,000 to purchase copies of his memoir “What Are the Odds? From Crack Addict to CEO.” The purchases are listed as “Advertising – general: Mike Lindell Books.”Mr. Lindell says his campaign decided to hand out copies of his autobiography to voters. He estimates that he’s handed out around 20,000 of his books.“When we’re going around to all the places in Minnesota, other people are giving a flyer,” Mr. Lindell told the Minnesota Reformer. “I’m giving them the whole book so they know who I am.”Mr. Lindell says MyPillow owns the rights to his book, so the money went to his own company.There are 10 candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor. The nominee is expected to face off with Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is the likely Democratic nominee.Mr. Lindell has insisted that the 2020 election was stolen from Mr. Trump by rigged electronic voting machines and Chinese and Iranian hackers. He has lost multiple legal challenges over those claims.Last September, a federal judge ruled that Mr. Lindell had defamed the election company Smartmatic with false statements. Months earlier, a federal jury found Mr. Lindell had defamed a former Dominion Voting Systems official he falsely claimed helped in the scheme to get President Biden elected.Election-related lawsuits have been financially devastating to Mr. Lindell. He has claimed his fortune has vanished due to his work uncovering claims of election corruption. In one trial he testified that he once had a net worth of $60 million but is now millions of dollars in debt. Major retailers stopped carrying his products due to his views. He continues to sell his pillows online.Mr. Lindell says he can not afford to self-fund his campaign. “Absolutely not. I can’t self-fund. I don’t have any money left,” Lindell told reporters at his campaign launch.
