President Clinton’s foundation, which has fought tenaciously to keep its donor list private, made a list of some donors available for sale through a commercial marketing firm, ABC News reported yesterday.
ABC said a list of about 38,000 donors to the foundation, which funded construction of Mr. Clinton’s library in Little Rock, Ark., was made available between June 2006 and May 2007 by Walter Karl, a subsidiary of InfoUSA. That company is run by a close friend and political supporter of the Clintons, Vinod Gupta. Mr. Clinton also serves as a paid adviser to the company
It is not clear whether the list included Mr. Clinton’s top donors or only those who gave at lower levels. While ABC reported that the list was sold, the custom in the industry is to rent such lists.
Mr. Clinton resisted disclosure of the list in 2001, when it was sought by a Congressional committee investigation pardon he granted, and again this year after Senator Clinton was asked about the issue in a presidential debate.
