WASHINGTON — A week ago he was “the man between war and peace.” Now he is history.
With stunning swiftness, Navy Admiral William Fallon is resigning as the commander of American forces in the Middle East, arguably the most important command in the American military. His stated reason: press reports portraying him as bucking President Bush on Iran.
Admiral Fallon was featured in an article published last week in Esquire magazine titled “The Man Between War and Peace.” The article presented Admiral Fallon as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program.
Without mentioning the magazine, Admiral Fallon alluded to the article in his resignation statement yesterday. He also said the reports were wrong.
