A police officer who took three bullets during a wild struggle with an armed man in a Bronx subway station was released from the hospital Saturday.

More than 100 police officers and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly were on hand to applaud the wounded officer, Annmarie Marchiondo, as she rolled out of New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases in a wheelchair.

Ms. Marchiondo, who was hospitalized for 28 days after the September 7 shooting, left with a smile and tears in her eyes.

“I just want to thank everybody,” Ms. Marchiondo told waiting reporters. “I feel great. Thank you.”

A 17-year veteran of the department, Ms. Marchiondo was hurt in the frenzy that erupted after she and two other officers stopped a man who had been illegally riding between two moving subway cars.

According to police, the man being detained, Juan Calves, 51, suddenly grabbed Ms. Marchiondo, put her in a headlock and pulled a gun.

The two other officers drew their own weapons and gunfire broke out. Calves, who was on parole after serving time for manslaughter and robbery, fired six shots before he was fatally wounded.

Ms. Marchiondo was hit in the hip, right ankle, and left foot. At least one of those bullets was fired by her rescuers, but police officials said their decision to shoot probably saved Ms. Marchiondo’s life.

“All of the officers involved did a remarkable job,” Mr. Kelly said. “In this case, the officers responded so quickly, and I think it saved their lives.”
