Billionaire businessman Ronald Lauder, a philanthropist and art collector, announced last night that he would run for president of the World Jewish Congress. He will face the chairman of the Congress’ Board of Governors, Mendel Kaplan, in a June 10 election. The organization had been run for more than a quarter-century by beverage magnate, Edgar Bronfman, who resigned earlier this month.
The organization, which has helped Holocaust survivors secure billions of dollars in restitution, has been at the center of high-profile in-fighting, and has faced charges of mismanagement in recent years.
