Pop songwriter Jack Keller, who wrote the theme song for “Bewitched” and other TV sitcoms and was a producer on the Monkees’ first album, died Friday at Nashville of leukemia. He was 68.
The son of a musician, Keller’s musical training began in childhood in his native Brooklyn; his first paid performance job was at age 16 in the Catskills Mountains during summer break.
A few years later, his career got a big break when he joined Aldon Music, Don Kirschner’s Brill Building publishing company, which included a stable of young pop songwriters such as Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield, and Carole Bayer Sager.
Keller and Greenfield wrote “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” and “My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own,” both no.1 hits for Connie Francis in 1960, and “Venus in Blue Jeans” for Jimmy Clanton. He also shared writing credit with Goffin on “Run to Him,” recorded by Bobby Vee.
After Aldon was purchased by the TV production company Screen Gems, Keller and Greenfield wrote the theme song for the shows “Bewitched” and “Gidget.” Keller also teamed with Ernie Sheldon to write “Seattle” for the Western sitcom “Here Come the Brides.”
The TV work led Keller to the Monkees, getting producer credit on their TV theme song and first album.
“Bewitched,” which is slated to be released later this year as a film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, appeared on ABC from 1964-1972. The show’s theme, although played as an instrumental at the show opening, originally included the words:
Bewitched, Bewitched, you’ve got me in your spell
Bewitched, Bewitched, you know your craft so well
Before I knew what you were doing I looked in your eyes
That brand of woo that you’ve been brewin’ took me by surprise
You witch, you witch, one thing that’s for sure
That stuff you pitch just hasn’t got a cure
My heart was under lock and key, but somehow it got unhitched
I never thought my heart could be had
But now I’m caught and I’m kinda glad to be
Bewitched. Be-Bewitched
