HOSPITAL HOOPLA
The Halloween-themed “Light Up a Life” event welcomes costumed children and families to enjoy live music, magicians, and rides of a 60-foot, indoor Ferris wheel. Appearances by Barbie, Big Apple’s “Circus to Go,” Winnie the Pooh, and the Yale Whiffenpoofs a cappella group add to the festivities. The event benefits Weill Cornell Medical Center’s pediatric programs, including the Clown Care Program, which brings clowns to the hospital to cheer young patients. POLAR PART 2
Author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg signs the new release of his 1986 Christmas classic “The Polar Express” (Houghton Mifflin). Mr. Van Allsburg won Caldecott awards for “The Polar Express” and for 1982’s “Jumanji” (Houghton Mifflin). FESTIVAL


COSTUME FUN
A playground festival at Madison Square Park celebrates autumn with pumpkin decoration, craft projects, and a performance by children’s musician Ivan Ulz, who will sing “Fire Truck” and other favorites. Children can attend dressed for Halloween to participate in a costume parade (4 p.m.). Whole Foods provides refreshments. FILM


TEEN SCREENS
The Museum of Modern Arts presents a film screening series for high school students. After the screenings, students discuss related topics with peers and film curators. This week, the 1997 political comedy “Wag the Dog” is shown as part of a subseries on leadership (Friday). An upcoming group of screenings on family relationships includes screenings of “Shrek” (November 5), “The Dream Catcher” (November 12), and “Whale Rider” (November 19). PRENATAL POSES
Attendees at the “Yoga for Your Pregnancy” DVD launch, presented by Yoga Journal and Lamaze, can be among the first to start practicing what celebrities like Christy Turlington and Gwyneth Paltrow preach: Doing yoga during pregnancy can ease the birthing process and minimize weight gain. JAZZY PARADE
The public grand opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new home starts with a New Orleans-style “second line parade” led by Wynton Marsalis. Today, 10 a.m., begins at Josie Robertson Plaza, Columbus Avenue and 63rd Street, and travels along Broadway to 60th Street, www.jalc.org, free.

FEAR FACTOR
Amsterdam’s Theater Terra stages the children’s play “Kikker,” based on a book series by Max Velthuijs. The story, which is intended for children ages 4 and older, focuses on a young boy who is nervous about moving to a new house. To help calm him, his mother tells stories about Frog and his best friends, Duck, Pig, and Hare. The group banishes under-the-bed monsters, saves Frog from becoming a frozen popsicle, and learns about the world from their well-traveled friend, Rat. The stories help Max learn that experiencing new things can be fun rather than scary. “Kikker” recently won the Dutch equivalent of a Tony award for best new musical.
