Bush Ladies Go from Goofy to Glam

From the podium to the floor, the Republicans have been turning out in style this week. While looks for the attendees have ranged from goofy to glam, the Bush ladies have been keeping up an attractive standard – with only a marginal misstep.
It looks like first lady Laura Bush has been taking advice from her father-in-law: she’s staying the course. Mrs. Bush maintained her penchant for feminine suits in bright colors twice this week. At a luncheon in her honor, she wore a light aqua-blue suit with a high neck from Oscar de la Renta. She went back to the same designer for her convention suit, made of a bright turquoise light-wool.
Both in her convention speech and her appearance, Mrs. Bush was all but unadorned. And for good reason. Though the lapel was slightly open, its high closure could only have used a necklace so thin it wouldn’t have shown up on television anyway – and pearls are certainly not an option; they are too closely identified with her mother-in-law.
The first daughters have mapped out a distinct contrast in their style. Jenna is going for a tailored, sharp look, while Barbara has more of a romantic, feminine flair.
The style split between the two was evident on Sunday night at “R: The Party.” Jenna’s black metallic blazer from Rebecca Taylor was in keeping with her structured style – albeit with a bit of a rock edge. Then on Tuesday at the tribute to mom, Jenna wore a white sheath dress with brown piping by Oscar de la Renta, who also designed the brown blazer with white trim she wore for her convention speech. Though the blazer comes with a skirt, Jenna avoided the matchy-matchy thing by pairing it with white James jeans. Though the jacket worked for her, brown is decidedly not the sensible color for television appearances. According to some wags about town, the look had all the grace of a track suit. It was a strong statement and a stylish result, so I’ll give the girl a break.
Her sister was in fine form with her flowing, willowy style for the convention speech. Her fluid short black dress with wide embroidery at the neck and waist was a winner by Catherine Malandrino. On Sunday night, the brunette wore a pretty green and cream Rebecca Taylor camisole. Then on the Tuesday, she went back to her roots: Texas designer Lela Rose made the loose, flower-print top that Ms. Bush wore to the luncheon for mummy.
As for the Silver Fox, the senior Barbara Bush was in pearls (as ever). On Monday night, she chose a red blazer with a thin white sweater underneath. Tuesday evening it was a gray suit with a blue shell underneath. And at least she’s keeping it red, white, and blue.
Which can also be said for many of the delegates, alternates, and convention attendees. Even so, plenty of stylish folks spotted in the crowd were dressed for the hitting of the town after the convention hall – and in those cases, the colors of the American flag were left where they belong. Because no matter how you slice it, in New York, red, white, and blue is not the new black.
