UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Jaromir Jagr broke a tie with Hall of Famer Jean Ratelle for the Rangers’ single-season points record last night, assisting on four straight goals in a 5-1 victory over the Islanders.

Drawing chants of “MVP! MVP!” from the many Rangers fans at Nassau Coliseum, Jagr passed Ratelle at 7:23 of the first period when he set up Petr Prucha’s power-play goal for point no. 110. Jagr also assisted on Martin Straka’s three goals to help the Rangers move four points ahead of Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division.

Jagr, trying to hold off San Jose’s Joe Thornton for his sixth NHL scoring title, is the clear favorite to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player, an award he won in 1998-99 with Pittsburgh. Jagr has 113 points in 73 games, seven more than Thornton has in 70 games for Boston and the Sharks.

Jagr also has an NHL-leading 52 goals, tied with Adam Graves for the team record. The 34-year-old Czech star had a chance to break that tie on a breakaway midway through the third period, but Rick DiPietro stopped him with a pad save.

Ratelle had 109 points in the 1971-72 regular season. Graves set the goals record in 1993-94, the season the Rangers won their last championship.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist also broke a team record for victories by a rookie, making 18 saves for his 30th win. The Swedish Olympic goalie improved to 30-10-9 to break a tie with Jim Henry (1941-42) and Johnny Bower (1953-54).

Blair Betts also scored for the Rangers. Alexei Yashin scored his 25th goal for the Islanders, 10 points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Prucha’s goal, the rookie’s 29th, gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 7:23 of the first period. Straka added goals at 8:53 and 13:59 of the first period and completed the hat trick at 12:14 of the second. He has 18 goals this season.

Jagr is 16th on the NHL’s career goals list with 589,22nd in assists with 833,and 14th in points with 1,422 in 1,100 games.
