KNICKS RE-SIGN BAKER The Knicks re-signed forward Vin Baker yesterday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Baker, 32, averaged 9.8 points, and 5.2 rebounds in 54 games with the Boston Celtics and the Knicks last year. He averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in 37 games, including 33 starts, with Boston before being suspended indefinitely for violating terms of his alcohol treatment program.
SOCCER
U.S. TIES JAMAICA IN QUALIFIER Brian Ching and Cobi Jones, a pair of substitutes, saved the United States against Jamaica last night.
With the entire island nation ready to celebrate their teams’ first victory over the Americans, Jones crossed into the penalty box in the 89th minute. Landon Donovan settled the ball and Ching sent a right-footed dagger into the Jamaicans for a 1-1 tie.
The Americans’ next game is September 4 at Foxboro, Mass., against El Salvador. The top two finishers in the group after six games advance to the Concacaf finals next year.
BRAZIL ROUTS HAITI IN FRIENDLY Brazil routed a weak Haitian team 6-0 yesterday in an exhibition soccer game aimed at promoting peace in the Caribbean country.
Ronaldinho scored three times and Roger twice as goals by the World Cup champions went flying past Haitian goalkeeper Fenelon Gabart. Nilmar had the other goal, and Brazilian star Ronaldo assisted twice.
ENGLAND, GERMANY AMONG WARM-UP WINNERS England defeated Ukraine 3-0 behind a goal each from Real Madrid teammates David Beckham and Michael Owen.
Germany beat Austria 3-1,with Kevin Kuranyi scoring three goals in the debut for new German coach Juergen Klinsmann.
In other key exhibitions, the Czech Republic and European champion Greece finished in a 0-0 tie in a replay of their semifinal in the European Championships.
Sweden rallied to tie Netherlands 2-2 in Marco van Basten’s coaching debut.
And, in another spoiled coaching debut, Marcello Lippi’s Italy fell 2-0 at lightly regarded Iceland.

DAMPHOUSSE SIGNS WITH COLORADO The Colorado Avalanche prepared for the potential loss of several key frontline players, signing former San Jose Sharks captain Vincent Damphousse to a one-year, $2 million contract yesterday.
