CHIEFS ROLL OVER RAMS Trent Green hit 10 of 12 passes, and Priest Holmes averaged 5.2 yards on six carries last night as the first-team offense scored on two of its three possessions in a 24-7 exhibition victory over St. Louis.
Holmes had 31 yards on six carries and scored on a 2-yard run for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Rams quarterback Mark Bulger was 8-for-15 for 67 yards and got sacked three times behind the his patchwork offensive line. Marshall Faulk, playing more than normal this early in the preseason, carried six times for 16 yards.
RIVERS ENDS HOLDOUT, SIGNS WITH CHARGERS After some bitter negotiations, quarterback Phillip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers agreed to terms on a six-year contract last night. Financial terms were not disclosed for Rivers, who was the last first-round pick to sign. Reports have the deal at $40 million.
Rivers was selected fourth overall in April’s draft by the Giants, then dealt to the Chargers for the top overall pick, Eli Manning and three draft picks. Talks between Rivers’s representatives and the Chargers stalled on August 8, when the team officials publicly announced that Rivers missed a deadline for agreeing to their “final offer.” Expected to battle Drew Brees for the starting job, Rivers’s holdout already has cost him two preseason games.

CUBS OKAY TO PLAY AT WRIGLEY The Chicago Buildings Commission declined to forbid baseball at Wrigley Field yesterday, saying inspectors could find “no evidence of shoddy repairs” at the Cubs’ home park.
Buildings Commissioner Stan Kaderbek threatened last week to cancel last night’s game against the Brewers if the ballpark didn’t pass new inspections. He ordered them after he was told by a Los Angeles Times reporter, who cited sources within the Cubs organization, that repair work at Wrigley had been shoddy.
The reporter and Tribune Co., owner of the newspaper as well as the Cubs and the Chicago Tribune, withdrew the remarks, saying there had been a mistake.
