Astros Slugger Jeff Bagwell Retiring

Jeff Bagwell, the face of Houston baseball for a generation with teammate Craig Biggio, will retire Friday after 15 years with the team.

The four-time All Star will remain with the Astros as part of a personalservices agreement reached with the team earlier this week, according to a person familiar with the team’s plan who requested anonymity because an official announcement had not been made.

FOOTBALL

Strahan Works in Giants Individual Drills For Second Straight Day

Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan took part in individual drills yesterday for the second straight day, the first time that has happened since the Giants veteran sprained his right foot against Houston early last month.

Strahan, who has missed the last five games, is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s crucial game versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Tom Coughlin said Strahan is making progress.

CYCLING

Former Elite Cyclist Thomas Indicted In Steroids Probe

A former world silver medalist, cyclist Tammy Thomas, 36, was the latest sports figure and first athlete to be indicted for hindering the 3-year-old grand jury probe. She faces three counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. Thomas was ordered to appear in court January 5. Each count carries a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
