FEDERAL AFFIDAVIT ON GRIMSLEY UNSEALED
Jose Canseco, Lenny Dykstra, Glenallen Hill, and Geronimo Berroa were accused of using steroids by former major league pitcher Jason Grimsley in a federal agent’s affidavit unsealed yesterday.
Grimsley also accused Chuck Knoblauch of using human growth hormone; David Segui and Allen Watson of using performance-enhancing drugs; and Rafael Palmeiro and Pete Incaviglia of taking amphetamines, according to IRS Special Agent Jeff Novitzky’s sworn statement.
All but Incaviglia, Berroa and Watson were mentioned last week in the Mitchell Report on doping in baseball.
Federal prosecutors yesterday unsealed a May 2006 affidavit by Novitzky used to obtain a search warrant for Grimsley’s home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
OUTFIELDER GEOFF JENKINS SIGNS WITH PHILLIES
Outfielder Geoff Jenkins agreed to a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, giving the defending NL East champions a veteran to help make up for the departure of All-Star Aaron Rowand.
The 33-year-old Jenkins hit .255 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs in 132 games last season for the Milwaukee Brewers.
“He can play right or left field and will give Charlie lineup options on an everyday basis,” general manager Pat Gillick said, referring to manager Charlie Manuel.
MARINERS INK SILVA ON $48M, 4-YEAR CONTRACT
Pitcher Carlos Silva and the Seattle Mariners finalized a $48 million, four-year contract yesterday. The 28-year-old right-hander was 13-14 last season for the Minnesota Twins with a 4.19 ERA— better than every Mariners starter other than hard-throwing Felix Hernandez.
