SEATTLE – Taking advantage of their opportunity to play, a handful of youngsters helped the Seattle Mariners to another impressive win over a pitcher with Hall of Fame credentials.
The Mariners knocked out Tom Glavine after just 2 1/3 innings and completed a three game sweep of the Mets with an 11-5 win yesterday.
The win came a day after Seattle beat Pedro Martinez for the first time ever. Martinez had been 13-0 against the Mariners. The Mets were swept for the third time. They have lost six of their last seven away from Shea Stadium.
The Mariners had a season-high 17 hits, including three by rookie catcher Rene Rivera, and won for the fifth time in six games. Seattle has 10 wins this month after going 9-18 in May and has won six of its last seven series.
A group of young talent sparked the Mariners. Rookies Jeremy Reed, Mike Morse, and Rivera, along with 21-year-old Jose Lopez combined for 11 of Seattle’s 17 hits, and drove in five runs.
Seattle’s youth was complemented by big hits from veterans Richie Sexson and Raul Ibanez. Sexson hit his 15th homer of the season in the first, a two run shot. Ibanez finished with three hits and had a two-out, two-run single in the sixth off reliever Royce Ring.
Glavine (4-7) allowed six runs and eight hits in his shortest start since June 5, 2003, against Milwaukee, when he left after one inning with inflammation in his pitching elbow.
His shortest start was May 16, 1989, against the Cubs, when Glavine was pulled without recording an out.
“I felt pretty good about most of the pitches I was making, but it seemed like the groundballs found holes and the bloopers found the outfield,” Glavine said. “It’s certainly not the kind of game I wanted to have. It wasn’t a good series for us.”
The Mariners scored four runs with two outs in the sixth after the Mets had cut a five-run deficit to 6-5.
Gil Meche (7-4) picked up his third win in his last four starts, surviving a four-run sixth inning by the Mets. Meche gave up five runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He was pulled after hitting Chris Woodward with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Reliever Matt Thornton threw a wild pitch that allowed David Wright to score, and gave up two-out, RBI singles to Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran. Thornton got Cliff Floyd to pop out to end the inning.
Floyd hit his 16th homer of the season in the second, a solo shot. Mike Piazza had three hits for the Mets.
Seattle used four hits and a walk to knock Glavine out in the third. It was the second straight loss for Glavine, who has just one win in his last six starts.
