Trump Administration Launches ‘Trump TV’ Amid Press Access Battle

The White House’s new 24-hour video streaming channel called “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” is the Trump’s administration’s latest attempt to bypass mainstream news outlets after complaining that it is receiving unfair coverage.The channel launched Monday night, just days after President Trump barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. The YouTube-based channel, which describes the service as featuring “top videos, major remarks, and must-see highlights streaming 24/7 and updated in real time,” is a way to watch the administration’s “biggest moments all in one place,” according to the stream.“Not every big moment has made it on your TV; now it can,” the White House wrote in a post on X.The channel’s first broadcast was a two-month-old speech Mr. Trump delivered at Mount Rushmore on July 3, followed by footage of his 2025 inauguration. The channel also streamed the president’s speech Tuesday morning before the United Nations General Assembly meeting at New York City.When the president arrived at the UN, he stopped to admonish one member of the press corps. “I’m surprised that CNN is here. You should not be here covering me. You said you weren’t going to cover me; you shouldn’t be covering me,” Mr. Trump said to White House reporter Kaitlan Collins.The launch of Trump TV drew immediate backlash from critics who likened it to “state-run media” systems in China, North Korea, and Russia. A conservative social media personality and former administration supporter Breck Worsham wrote on X, “Trump is literally getting ready to launch a state-run media called Trump TV. Didn’t another dictator have a state-run media, or was I imagining that?”A former U.S. Capitol Police sergeant who defended the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attacks, Aquilino Gonell, called it “official state-run media” in a post on X, adding, “But look over there… the communist. Literally shredding the constitution.”The channel’s debut coincided with an escalating conflict between the administration and the press. On Friday, Mr. Trump announced he would bar journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House grounds, citing “purposely negative stories.” Badges from journalists at those outlets were confiscated Saturday.According to The Wall Street Journal, the ban was announced after White House aide Natalie Harp showing Mr. Trump clips of MS NOW anchors criticizing his administration.In a Truth Social post Monday, Mr. Trump defended the decision. “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America.”The dispute intensified Monday when the White House refused to let CNN serve as the pool representative for Trump’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly. In response, the five-network television pool — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC — announced it would suspend coverage of presidential events entirely.“Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” wrote Fox News’ Washington bureau chief, Bryan Boughton, acting chairman of the pool consortium.CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have since sued the administration in U.S. District Court at Washington, alleging the ban violates the First Amendment and Due Process clause. “This ban could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment,” the lawsuit states.Some Republicans have defended Trump’s move. Senator John Barrasso told “Meet the Press” Sunday that “the press has an obligation to report fairly,” while the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told CNN that journalists don’t have “an inherent right to any government facility that you want.”
