UFC White House Spectacle Draws Global Attention — and Mounting Controversy

When UFC president Dana White first floated the idea of staging a fight card at the White House, the promise was nothing short of historic.Mr. White vowed the event would feature “the greatest card of all time,” a never-before-seen spectacle designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 80th birthday of President Trump.For months, anticipation rippled through the mixed martial arts world. High-profile fighters openly campaigned for a place on the card; social media buzzed with dream matchups, and fans speculated about a blockbuster lineup worthy of such a unique venue.But with roughly three months remaining before the scheduled June 14 event, officially dubbed UFC Freedom 250, the excitement has begun to give way to skepticism.Critics have panned the recently unveiled fight card as underwhelming. Ms. Rousey, currently promoting her MMA return fight against Gina Carano on a separate event promoted by Jake Paul’s MVP Promotions, said the White House card “sucks,” while Mr. Jones said he received a “low ball” offer to fight on the White House and has asked to be released from his UFC contract.“If the UFC truly feels like I’m done, then I respectfully ask to be released from my contract today,” Mr. Jones said in a statement after the White House card was announced. “No more spins, no more games.”Mr. White admitted the fight lineup was “a lot more difficult to put together than we anticipated, but we got it done.”The result is a good card. Mr. Topuria is one of the UFC’s fastest rising stars, while Mr. Gaethje, popular for his rugged style, could be making his final push for an undisputed title. But many MMA analysts said the card lacks drama between fighters and certainly isn’t historic.Security Concerns Amid Global TensionsPlans for the White House fight began long before Mr. Trump’s decision last month to join Israel in a military conflict with Iran. Amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, some are questioning the wisdom of holding such a high-profile event on White House grounds.The Octagon will be situated on the South Lawn of the White House where about 5,000 free VIP tickets will be distributed primarily to members of the military, government officials, dignitaries and invited guests. That piece of property figures to be the most heavily protected location in the world. But up to 85,000 fans are expected to gather in the Ellipse — a large public park south of the White House — to watch the fights on large screens.UFC commentator and prominent podcaster Joe Rogan voiced concern about the setting, saying, “I know it’s going to be very high security and high stress,” he said. “But it’s weird to have a fight at the White House in the middle of a war.”Mr. Rogan added that bringing thousands of people together near the White House “where everybody’s in one place,” could create a target for a terrorist attack. “It’s crazy,” he said, adding, “Seems like you’re asking for … yeah.”Logistics and Regulatory QuestionsThe Combat Sports Commission in Washington oversees boxing and mixed martial arts events in the nation’s capital and would normally be called upon to sanction such events. But they have been ghosted by the UFC when it comes to the Freedom card.Commission chairman Andrew Huff said the organization has not yet received formal application tied to the June event and warned that fighters must receive proper licensing before competing.“Every promoter in the District of Columbia should be, and is, held to the same standard whether you’re putting on a small wrestling show or a major event,” Mr. Huff said recently.Recent reports suggest the event might be in danger because the UFC has not paid $100 for a permit for the event. But most of the major requirements like medical forms, license applications, fighter contracts, and a final bout sheet aren’t due until at least five days before the weigh-in.But Mr. Huff told The New York Sun he anticipates meeting with White House staff and Secret Service long before that to discuss protocol for ringside and fight officials. “It might be a couple of months out or it could be later, but we’re proceeding with the assumption that we would sanction the fight,” Mr. Huff told the Sun. “It’s probably going to be a big event.”Trump turns fight promoterMr. Trump has been a long-time fight fan and supporter dating back to when he partnered with high-haired boxing promoter Don King to put on Mike Tyson’s memorable 91-second knockout of with Michael Spinks in Atlantic City in 1988.He also was among the few willing to stage a UFC event at his Atlantic City casino when MMA struggled to get acceptance as a mainstream sport.Mr. Trump even backed Don Jr. when his son partnered with Affliction, a T-shirt company that became a UFC rival when it began promoting MMA bouts in 2008. The company folded after one year, and Mr. Trump began aligning with the UFC and his friend, Mr. White by appearing frequently at many of the company’s major events.It was Mr. White, who introduced Mr. Trump before his speech at the Republican Convention, solidifying a friendship that led to discussion of staging a fight at the White House.“Dana had the idea of staging it right at the front door of the White House,” Mr. Trump said. “They all want to fight at the White House. It’ll be great.”Mr. Trump plans on being on the front row. “I will,” he said. “It’s going to be amazing at the White House. And Dana is a great guy. The best. There’s nobody like him.”Just how political the evening gets is uncertain. Many of the UFC fighters openly support the president, and don’t expect to see many Democratic political figures eating popcorn while sitting close Mr. Trump.The UFC said the production will be more of a national celebration than a political statement. “I don’t know how it would be too political other than it’s at the White House,” Mr. White said. “George Bush was a big baseball fan. (Barack) Obama was an NBA fan. Trump is a UFC fan.”One thing is certain: UFC Freedom 250 is shaping up to be a unique experience. The combination of world championship fights, global attention, a national celebration and an iconic venue makes the event one of the most unusual sports spectacles ever proposed despite the growing concerns and criticism.
