Thirty-Three Countries Tell Citizens To Stockpile Supplies as Warnings Spread Across Six Continents

Thirty-three countries spanning six continents are officially advising citizens to stockpile food, water, and emergency supplies, with the list expanding again in the past week. The United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Australia, India, Brazil, and two dozen other nations have issued guidance telling households to prepare for emergencies ranging from severe weather and cyberattacks to full-scale military conflict. The warnings came out the same week the Pentagon disclosed its FORTRESS plan to keep U.S. military bases operational for 90 days without civilian infrastructure. Days earlier, a former FBI deputy director, Dan Bongino, urged Americans to act immediately, saying, “Get your stuff today. Please. Do it for your family.”While not directly related to the warnings, last week’s $6.3 billion hack of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance has heightened awareness about how rogue states and cybercriminals can use AI agents to attack global financial and other infrastructure in unprecedented ways.In North America, the United States, Canada, and Mexico have all issued guidance, with FEMA and Ready.gov recommending at least three days of supplies, ideally up to two weeks.Europe has the longest list of participating countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and several Baltic and Eastern European states. In Asia, similar warnings have been issued by Japan, Taiwan, Israel, India, the Philippines, and Singapore. Japan’s disaster management minister, Goshi Hosono, said, “I would like to say at least three days’ worth and a week’s worth if possible. Please prepare enough food, toilet supplies, and water at home so that you can manage even without public support from the government.”South Africa is the sole African nation on the list, while Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina round out South America’s contribution. Each country cites different motivations for the sudden surge. Japan is bracing for a potential major earthquake given its seismic activity while Australia is pointing to natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and byushfires. The Baltic states and Scandinavian countries point to Russian military threats along their borders. The United Kingdom cites severe weather, cyberattacks, and infrastructure disruption, while the United States remains engaged in conflict with Iran. It’s the convergence of these warnings that has drawn attention. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, added to the tension last week, stating, “We are ready for war with Europe, but we don’t want it. If things go too far, there will be no winners at all.”Guidance varies slightly by country, but core recommendations remain consistent: one gallon of water per person daily for at least three days; non-perishable food; a battery-powered radio; flashlights; a first aid kit; a week’s supply of prescription medication, and basic sanitation supplies.Mr. Bongino additionally recommended water filtration tools, noting, “Have yourself an emergency radio, have yourself some batteries, get yourself some emergency food, get yourself a rain collection and water filtration, and get some filtration tablets.”Britain has rolled out its own push, urging households to stock nine liters of bottled water — equal to 9.5 quarts — and three days of food. Security Minister Dan Jarvis said, “Those who can follow this advice should follow this advice,” describing it as part of a broader effort “to improve our resilience as a nation.”Britain’s defense secretary, Wes Streeting, warned of “state-sponsored terrorism” from hostile powers targeting infrastructure, adding, “It’s really important that we ask households and businesses, are they prepared? Are they ready?”
